Shockwave Therapy

A revolutionary, clinically proven, highly effective therapy for soft tissue tendon injuries & chronic pain

High-tech, non-invasive treatment for chronic soft tissue, tendon and certain bone conditions

A highly effective therapy which produces a regenerative and tissue repairing effect in musculoskeletal tissues, while decreasing the high levels of inflammatory and pain responses

Have you been suffering from chronic tendon pain following an injury or surgery? There is nothing worse than expecting a long recovery or worse still finding that conventional therapies aren’t working. Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy (ESWT), is a clinically proven, non-invasive, highly effective treatment for chronic soft tissue, tendon and certain bone conditions.

The Elements of Healing

Our Radial Shockwave system exerts a mechanical pressure and tension force (high energy pulses), which are applied through the applicator head-on contact to the injury site.

This mechanical pressure causes cavitation (formation of empty space) in the tissues. As these bubbles collapse, they create smaller secondary energy waves, further assisting in the breakdown of pathological deposits within the damaged tissues. The several thousand shockwaves that are applied through injured tissue help create stimulation of fibroblasts (cells fundamental in the formation and healing of our muscle/tendon/ligament/skin tissues) and osteoblasts (cells that form new bone) enhancing the healing process and cell generation of soft tissue and bones.

Reducing Pain

ESWT also targets pain by stimulating anaesthesia where nerves sending pain signals to the brain become over stimulated resulting in decreased activity thus diminishing or eliminating pain. After a few treatments the pain gate control mechanism alters its stimulation, and as a result, we see longer periods of decreased pain. Finally, ESWT is believed to trigger a ‘reset’ button that recalibrates pain perception centrally.

So why not target your tendon, ligament, muscle or joint pain effectively and enhance post surgical recovery, while receiving tailor rehabilitation for your lifestyle or sporting needs?

The Results

After having a hip replacement 2 years ago, I began suffering from pain in my upper leg. The consultants said I’d have to live with the pain. I decided I couldn’t live with the pain any more, and 8th Element suggested shockwave therapy alongside rehab, and after only 4 sessions I’m pain-free! I can now play golf and move freely thanks to their expertise. Worth every penny and I can't thank you enough. Highly recommend!

I was diagnosed with golfers elbow which had caused me to withdraw from a professional competition last month. Needing the fastest route back we began shockwave therapy straight away and although I have 2 more treatments left, after only 4 treatments combined with physio I’m now loading and playing pain-free. Superb treatment and an amazing clinic.

After months of ongoing knee pain, missing a season of matches and wasted physio sessions at various establishments, I was recommended 8th Element. The initial consultation was extremely valuable and as such I started a course of ESWT and Physio. I was amazed at the improvement after only a few weeks. After the course was complete, I was back playing football and have been pain-free ever since. I cannot recommend shockwave therapy enough.

Don FosterFootballer

Plantar Fasciitis had hindered my running and stopped it all together until I received shockwave therapy. I was amazed at the level of improvement in such a short period of time, which allowed the personalised rehabilitation plan to help me return to pain-free running again. For any tendon pain in the future, I will automatically opt for shockwave therapy.

I used shockwave therapy in combination with sprint specific rehabilitation after sustaining a hamstring tendon injury. I’m amazed at the speed of my recovery. The expertise and knowledge of the team at 8th Element have been fundamental in my recovery. I’d highly recommend their services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How effective is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)?

After only 3 or 5 treatments with shockwave therapy, over 80% of patients report a reduction of pain and regaining of normal function.

How long is a session?

Each appointment is 35 minutes and consists of 5 minutes consultation. 10-15 minutes of Shockwave therapy and the remaining time is spend using manual therapy techniques and educating you to the relevant rehabilitation require for your injury.

Is Shockwave therapy Painful?

Shockwave therapy can produce a small amount of discomfort over the injury site for a few minutes, however, If you are in pain during the treatment please notify your medical practitioner as there are some adjustments that can be made to reduce the discomfort.

Having some pain during the treatment illustrates that shockwaves are having a positive effect.

Can I train after receiving Shockwave therapy?

Even if you are in no pain, we strongly encourage you NOT to partake in intensive activities, or cause stress to the area treated for 48hrs.

What shall I do if I am in pain after the shockwave treatment?

Shockwave therapy treatment initiates a pro-inflammatory response in the tissue that is being treated. If necessary, you may use ordinary prescription-free pain killers. Do not use anti-inflammatory medication or ice on the treated area as both may interfere with the body’s self-healing abilities.

How many shockwave treatments will I need?

Research has shown an overall improvement of 61-90% in chronic tendinopathies (depending on location) that have not been cured by other treatment. It can take 3 to 5 treatments to show up to 80% improvements. A review at 12 weeks is recommended following your final treatment. If at this stage your symptoms are unchanged you will be advised of alternative treatments/surgery.

What's the benefit of a course of 5 sessions?

As well as the bulk-discount of booking 5 sessions at once, current research reports success rates between 65% and 91% in reducing patient’s pain and symptoms after a course of 3-5 sessions.
