Injection Therapy Explained

Expertly administered ultrasound-guided injections that break the cycle of pain and swelling across musculoskeletal injuries & conditions

Steroid (corticosteroid) injections are given to provide pain relief and reduce inflammation in the joints and soft tissues of the body. Cortisone is used which is a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine that works to break the cycle of pain and swelling in the joint.  Once pain is reduced a graduated return to normal exercise can be supervised by one of our practitioners.

Steroid injections are an extremely effective treatment of sports Injuries and inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis (wear and tear, arthritis), rheumatoid arthritis and sudden painful attacks caused by gout and are a popular choice of pain relief lasting up to 6-12 months.
Usually administered when other forms of physiotherapy hasn’t been successful, or when you’re suffering from overuse syndromes.

An accurate diagnosis of the injury or condition is essential, and our clinicians are experts in diagnosis. They will examine you thoroughly and our doctor may use relevant ultrasound to assist the diagnosis. If necessary, you will be referred for an MRI or to a surgeon if surgery is indicated.

Our Injection therapy service is flexible around your work schedule and affordable. Our Doctor or Sports Medicine Podiatrist will assess and advise on your injury and ascertain if a steroid injection would be beneficial to your condition. If you decided to proceed, it could be booked in for the same day/appointment or scheduled to a date to suit.

Typical conditions that we treat:
  • Hands – Trigger fingers injection
  • Elbows – Medial and lateral epicondylitis (golfers and tennis elbow respectively)

The Results

Visited the clinic to see Dr Vik with on going knee issues after being let down with past treatment. Was fully informed of my options and what treatment options I had. A full support package was discussed before I went ahead with the injection. From start to finish time was taken to make me aware of all out comes and the best way forward. I can now work on my knee strength with confidence. Thank you John and Dr Vik!

Martyn Beswick

Very helpful, it was so nice to speak with a dr who cares and understands my lifestyle needs. He discussed my ongoing knee issues and explained the problem with such clarity while discussing my options. A very good service, I'll definitely use again.

Physiotherapy FAQ

Is it safe? Are you trained to give injections?

Yes and Yes!

We have a Private GP and Sports Medicine Podiatrist in our clinic who are fully trained (and licensed) and who have helped hundreds of individuals and athletes return to full health and performance without the need of surgery or medication, using injection therapy.

Do steroid injection have a temporary effect?

The cortisone injected lasts in the body for around 2 weeks after which, occasionally the pain can return. This only occurs when the underlying cause of the pain has not been addressed. At 8th Element we always address the underlying cause of the pain so that the pain is unlikely to return after an injection.

Are Cortisone Injections Painful?

In the past, cortisone injections were done without anaesthetic in a doctor’s surgery without image guidance.

At 8th Element most of the injections include an anaesthetic to the skin and the cortisone is mixed with local anaesthetic which can result in an almost pain free injection.

In some parts of the body there are more sensory nerves and some discomfort is inevitable, but we do our best to keep this to an absolute minimum.

Can I only have 3 injections?

If repeatedly injected into the same place there have been reports of degradation of collagen and other soft tissues. The very fact that repeated injections were used in these case studies suggest that the injection was not working, in which case there should not be a need to repeat the injections.

At 8th Element we limit the injections to a maximum of three in the same part of the body in a short period of time. Alternatives are Shockwave Therapy depending on the diagnosis.

How long does it take to work?

Most pain relief occurs during the first 2-4 weeks and you should contact the clinic for advice to see if you need a second injection for the best outcome after a couple of weeks. Once you are in less pain it is important that you book in to see one of our physios so they can monitor your progress and give you a graduated exercise programme to increase strength and mobility to successfully address the underlying cause.

Why a Private GP?

As if the pain and lack of movement isn’t enough stress – why add excessive NHS waiting times to your condition? It’s both mentally draining and overwhelming and has a negative effect on our physical movement, creating restrictions and pain that prevents us living life.

Better still our Ironman Dr understands sports and performance first-hand so can offer you specific, tailored support to get you back to your peak! No more telling you just to rest and take pain meds!
