Osteopathy

Improving pain and movement without the use of drugs or surgery by restoring your body to a state of balance

This safe and regulated service reduces pain through skeletal adjustments, soft tissue release, dry needling, taping and rehabilitation

Enhancing skeletal alignment and mobility whilst improving the blood and nerve supply to your body’s movement

Our master of Osteopathy uses clinical diagnosis, touch, physical manipulation, stretching, dry needling, KT taping and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, helping your body’s own healing mechanisms, and putting you on the path to pain free recovery.

For your body to move and work freely as intended, its structure must also move and work freely. Which is why Osteopathy is so beneficial in tackling posture and work-related stresses and the treatment of injuries.

You don’t need to be injured to see our Osteopath – why not book in for a structural MOT.

Our osteopath will focus on the relationship between the bones, muscles, ligaments and their connective tissues, ensuring they are all working together as one system.

What to Expect

Consultation

Our initial one-to-one consultation allows us to take a detailed history and complete an expert assessment allowing us to understand the nature of the injury and pain and how we can successfully create a structured hands-on approach to ensure a combination of evidence-based treatments and advice are implemented ensuring our effectiveness in assisting you in, achieving realistic goals in your return to ‘normal’ activities whilst achieving a pain free lifestyle, in as short a time as possible.

Education

We focus heavily on education, which is why our expert osteopath will always give you a clear explanation of what they find (diagnosis) and discuss a tailored treatment plan that is suitable for you. The treatment risks and benefits will be covered and any skilled adjustment of the spine or joints will be explained, and permission sought. It is likely that multiple methods of treatment will be performed in one appointment.

Once treatment is completed, we shall always provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

Regulation

Whilst many people are familiar with the idea of osteopaths using physically vigorous methods to produce ‘cracks’ and ‘pops’ in the back and neck, this is really only a small part of the treatment and may, depending on your situation, be unnecessary.

Osteopathy is a statutorily regulated profession, like doctors and dentists. All osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and must adhere to strict practice standards issued by the GOsC

Alex was warm and welcoming, he managed to fix my ongoing back pain with a week to spare before my wedding in Portugal. I Highly recommend his services and 8th Element as a clinic. I shall definitely attend again for any future issues. Don’t suffer, when the pain can be dealt with by Alex.

Mark Degiorgio

Went in limping with a bad back and 1 hr later, I went home running and feeling like I could do back flips.

Janis Strods

After suffering from Sciatic pain for 6 months, and with no help from the Drs or other professionals I made the best decision ever and headed to see Alex at 8th Element. After an extremely professional and confident appointment, I have woken up pain-free for the first time in months. It's still a progressive recovery, but I am so thankful.

Rachel Heathfield

After 10 years of constant neck pain and visiting LOT’s of other professionals, Alex found the route of my issue and instantly made a huge difference in my pain and movement levels. I’m now pain-free and that’s all down to the skill and professionalism of Alex. Thank you so much.

David Hill

After suffering with a very odd shoulder problem which other professionals from different clinics couldn’t diagnose, Alex identified the problem within 45 minutes! Despite treatment not being available due to the nature of injury, an MRI confirmed his diagnosis and surgery booked – I’m so thankful for the accurate and speedy diagnosis and referral for an MRI. These guys are in my opinion the best around

Osteopathy FAQ

Can anyone see an osteopath?

Yes, we deal with a huge variety of injuries and pain, helping diagnose, treat and educate you on the issues you are struggling with. Striving to have you pain-free and educated on your own rehab and how you can help your self in no time.

What’s the typical length of an Osteopathic appointment?

At 8th Element, the initial consultation and assessment is 45-50 minutes, with follow up treatments lasting 30 minutes.

Can anyone call themselves an osteopath?

The title ‘osteopath’ is protected by law, and only those included on the Register are entitled to practice as osteopaths. Unregistered practice is a criminal offence in the UK.

Do GPs refer their patients to osteopaths?

Yes. GPs refer patients to osteopaths where they believe this intervention would be beneficial. Referral guidelines are provided by the General Medical Council.

Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?

Most patients ‘self refer’ to an osteopath for treatment. Although referral by a GP is not necessary, patients are encouraged to keep both their GP and osteopath fully informed, so that their medical records are current and complete and the patient receives the best possible care from both healthcare practitioners.

Can I claim on my private medical insurance?

Many private health insurance policies provide cover for osteopathic treatment. It may be possible to claim for a course of treatment but you should check in advance with your insurance company before seeking osteopathic treatment, in order to confirm the available level of cover and whether you will need to have a referral from your GP or a specialist.

What training do osteopaths have?

Undergraduate students follow a four or five-year degree course combining academic and clinical work. Qualification generally takes the form of a bachelor’s degree in osteopathy – a BSc(Hons), BOst or BOstMed – or a masters degree in osteopathy (MOst). Many osteopaths continue their studies after graduating. Osteopaths are required to update their training throughout their working lives. They must complete at least 30 hours of Continuing Professional Development per year.

What can I expect on my first visit to an osteopath?

At the first consultation, the osteopath will compile a full case history of your symptoms, as well as asking for information about your lifestyle and diet. The osteopath may also observe you making some simple movements to help them make a diagnosis. You will usually be asked to remove some clothing near the area of the body to be examined. Osteopaths are trained to examine areas of the body using a highly-developed sense of touch, known as palpation, to determine conditions and identify the body’s points of weakness or excessive strain. Osteopathy is a ‘package’ of care that includes skilled mobilising and manipulative techniques, reinforced by guidance on diet and exercise. The osteopath will discuss with you the most appropriate treatment plan, estimating the likely number of sessions needed to treat your condition effectively. If the osteopath thinks that your condition is unlikely to respond to osteopathic treatment, you will be advised about how to seek further care. Osteopaths are skilled in diagnostic techniques and trained to identify when a patient needs to be referred to a GP.

Is Osteopathy Safe?

Osteopathy has an extremely safe reputation and a major adverse occurrence is very rare, rarer than from taking medication (Carnes D, Mars TS, Mullinger B, Froud R, Underwood M Study by Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London Warwick Medical School and the European School of Osteopathy, into ‘Adverse events in Manual Therapy 2009)

How long does it take to qualify to become an Osteopath?

An osteopathic degree takes a minimum of 4 years and requires completion of over 1000 hours of clinical contact prior to qualification (Institute of Osteopathy 2017).
